Physical Therapy for Rotator Cuff Tear Management

A rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. These muscles help to stabilize the shoulder joint and allow for movement of the arm. Whether you are familiar with physiology or not, you may already know that a rotator cuff tear is a tear in one or more of these muscles or tendons.

What are the most common reasons for rotator cuff injuries?

  1. Age – Rotator cuff tears are more common in people over the age of 40.
  2. Gender – Rotator cuff tears are more common in men than in women.
  3. Occupation – Rotator cuff tears are more common in people who have occupations that involve overhead use of the arms, such as painters, carpenters, and athletes.
  4. Sports – Rotator cuff tears are common in overhead sports, such as baseball, tennis, and volleyball.
  5. Injury history – People who have had a previous shoulder injury are more likely to develop a rotator cuff tear. Without proper care and training, people —especially athletes— may sustain another, and sometimes more severe, shoulder injury even after completing their rehabilitation or treatment program

Physical therapy is an important part of the rehabilitation process for rotator cuff tears. Physical therapy can help reduce pain, improve the range of motion, and strengthen the shoulder muscles.

Aside from rotator cuff therapy, some physical therapy techniques may be used for rotator cuff tear rehabilitation. These methods include:

  • Manual therapy: Manual therapy techniques, such as massage and stretching, can help to reduce pain and improve the range of motion.
  • Exercise: Exercises can help to strengthen the shoulder muscles and improve the range of motion.
  • Joint mobilization: Joint mobilization techniques can help to improve the range of motion and reduce pain.
  • Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy, or the application of cold therapy, can help to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Heat therapy: Heat therapy can help to improve the range of motion and reduce pain.
  • Ultrasound therapy: Ultrasound therapy can help reduce pain and inflammation.
