What is it?
This is an electrotherapy modality sometimes used by physiotherapists to provide pain relief for certain clients/conditions. It works by stimulating the nerves responsible for feeling, which in turn activates our body’s natural pain relief mechanisms.
Common uses include musculoskeletal pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, shin splints & restless leg syndrome.
What can I expect?
Your physiotherapist will place 1-4 small adhesive pads to the affected area for a few minutes.
The gel pads contain electrodes through which the electrical current is transmitted.
You will likely feel a light tingling sensation, very similar to experiencing ‘pins & needles’ and sometimes twitching of the muscle
Improved tissue function
Improved muscle activation
Better muscular control with functional movements
