Craniosacral therapy or cranial sacral therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, gentle, hands-on massage technique to relieve pain and discomfort. It involves light touches which release tension in the fascia – the body’s network of connective tissues. The technique is often used to relieve headaches and neck pain, as well as side effects of cancer treatment.
The benefits of Craniosacral Physical therapy have been observed for many years and it is known for providing positive health outcomes for patients. Since this technique targets the central nervous system, it has been used not only to provide relief but also to treat various medical conditions. Here are some of its well-known benefits:
CST helps soothe pain and discomfort. It is also known to relieve physical and emotional stress and tension.
CST may be recommended for people of all ages. Due to its gentle nature, it can be children and infants. This type of therapy is often included in treatment programs for people affected by these conditions:
Although it has many benefits and is a suitable treatment method for different conditions, there are certain conditions where therapists or specialists will delay or won’t recommend CST as it might have a negative effect or intervene with their recovery.
CST is not recommended for patients suffering from blood clots, brain aneurysms, Chiari malformation, concussion, and other conditions that can cause cerebrospinal fluid pressure, flow, or buildup.
Therapists will inform you if you are suitable to receive CST and will recommend another treatment method to relieve pain and discomfort if you have the conditions mentioned above.
You may also learn how to massage your head and neck to relieve tension and help you relax at home, especially in between treatments with a trained therapist. However, you must remember that CST must only be performed by trained therapists who are educated in applying certain techniques and you are not to do such motions on your own.
Scandinavian Physiotherapy Center DMCC offers a range of treatment plans that can be tailored to your requirements, considering existing medical conditions.
